Balanced Living Expert Susan Sly Discusses the Negative Effects of Social Media Addiction

Best-selling author, time management expert, and work life balance specialist, speaker, and performance coach Susan Sly releases new article about how social media can be bad for work-life balance and your emotional well-being.

Scottsdale, AZ. — May 4, 2017— Best-selling author, speaker, and entrepreneur Susan Sly recently published a new article, “When Social Media Sucks…the Life Right Out of Your Work-Life Balance: How Social Media Addiction or Abuse Can Be BAD for Your Emotional Well-Being.”

As Susan explains, work-life balance is a huge factor in productivity. Having our lives out of balance causes many areas of our life to suffer. Yet, she adds, most of the time we worry about working too much and playing too little. But what if it’s the reverse?

Either direction – all work and no play or all play and no work – results in a life not in balance. Susan states, “Spending too much time relaxing, goofing around, or being non-productive instead of accomplishing what we need to accomplish, can be just as much of an issue (if not more for some people) than too much work and no play.”

One of the more common ways today that we “play” to the detriment of productivity, is on and in social media. Susan elaborates, “Experts say that’s when social media can be BAD—if it becomes so consuming so it throws our attempts at balanced living out of whack. Social media can be a time-hog if we are not careful. We get on for just a minute, then look at the clock and notice hours have gone by…”

Of course, some say they get their balance through social media—that it’s their “release.” Yet, the evidence Susan presents doesn’t really support this. She goes on to provide several pieces of research on the subject, from numerous studies. She adds, “The results were very interesting! Even though social media interactions seemed to mirror in-person interactions, in-person social interactions strengthened emotional well-being while the same on social media hindered it. In fact, a year of social media interaction seemed to correlate with negative emotional health.”
