LOS ANGELES, CA December 20, 2018: Owner and Founder of Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute and Roxbury Surgical Center, David Saadat, M.D., posted a new article on his website entitled, “Kicking The Month Off With Aids Awareness And Handwashing.” During this jolly season, Dr. Saadat reminds readers not to lose sight of important health issues.

Dr. Saadats writes, “December is a month in which everyone celebrates something. If it isn’t Christmas, it’s Hanukah or Kwanza or Festivus For The Rest of Us.” He continues adding, “With an unusual amount of socializing that happens during the month of December, I would like to turn your attention to two events that are typically recognized at the beginning of the month that can help keep you and your loved ones healthier year-round.”

Dr. Saadat points out that, “World AIDS Day is always on December 1^st.” “However,” he adds, “the issue is one that is here every day of the year. In fact according to worldaidsday.com, “Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition.”

 

Dr. Saadat highlights some startling statistics. Dr. Saadat then goes on to talk about National Hand Washing Awareness Week that occurred on December 3^rd through December 9^th. He states, “We all know how important handwashing is to hygiene. But, it was just 200 years ago that a Hungarian physician by the name of Ignaz Semmelwies saw how handwashing prevented the spread of disease.”  He goes on to elaborate, writing, “Unfortunately many doctors’ egos got in the way and they refused to wash their hands between surgeries. Later on, Florence Nightingale also recognized the importance of handwashing in curtailing the spread of disease. Again, the information was ignored.”

“According to globalhandwashing.org,” writes Dr. Saadat, “It was not until the 1980s, when a string of foodborne outbreaks and healthcare-associated infections led to public concern that the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified hand hygiene as an important way to prevent the spread of infection.
