Milwaukee Area Dentist Tony Cigno Publishes New Article About Dental Care as Your Age

Milwaukee area dentist Dr. Tony discusses aging and dental care and what you need to know.

Greenfield, WI — February 13, 2018 — Wisconsin Dentist Tony Cigno recently published an article titled, “Aging and Dental Care: What You Need to Know.”

Dr. Tony CignoAs Dr. Cigno explains, issues such as inflammation, gum disease, and tooth decay, while always a concern in regard to dental health, can cause much bigger problems as we age. He adds, “That’s why it is important to take care of your teeth early on, to prevent bigger problems later.”

First, he covers tooth brushing tips for older adults. One thing he mentions specifically, is to remember that the bathroom sink isn’t the only place you can brush your teeth. Specifically, “Brushing can be done anywhere with a towel and some water. Do whatever keeps you comfortable so that you can keep brushing a part of your daily routine.”

He also advises choosing the right toothbrush for you, and your age, is important as well. Dr. Cigno elaborates that softer bristles are usually recommended for persons as they age and even kid-sized toothbrushes work well as you get older, both for comfort and for ease of use.

Another tip he gives is that it’s much better for your teeth, gums, and overall dental health, if you can avoid dry mouth. Dr. Cigno explains that this happens when you don’t produce enough saliva. This can be a side-effect of medications or eating too many sweets, even.

Additionally, Dr. Cigno reminds that it’s critical to not stop flossing as you get older either. He goes on to say that if flossing is difficult for you, there are alternatives such as interdental brushes, floss picks, water flossers, and floss threaders.
