Milwaukee Area Dentist Tony Cigno Publishes New Article Discussing the Different Types of Dental X-Rays

Milwaukee area dentist Dr. Tony Cigno outlines the different dental x-rays provided by dentists.

Greenfield, WI — August 18, 2017 — Wisconsin Dentist Tony Cigno recently published an article titled, “What Are the Most Common Forms of Dental X-Rays?

Dr. Tony CignoAs Dr. Cigno explains, there are two primary categories of x-rays. These include introral x-rays and extraoral x-rays. He elaborates that intraoral dental x-rays are those taken with the film inside of the mouth. On the other hand, extraoral x-rays are performed with the film outside of the mouth.

Intraoral, he says, are the most common type of dental x-rays performed. In this category, there are bite-wing x-rays, periapical x-rays, and occlusal x-rays.

Bite-wing x-rays focus on the top – or crowns – of the back teeth to help your dentist identify decay there. Like the name hints, you bite down on a wing-shaped device that holds the film. On the other hand, periapical x-rays look at one or two teeth at a time. Finally, occlusal x-rays are ‘big picture’ x-rays that look at the full arch of either the top or bottom teeth.

Dr. Cigno also talks about extraoral x-rays, explaining that they aren’t as detailed as the intraoral type, so usually aren’t used in cavity identification or to look at individual teeth.

He also briefly touches on panoramic and digital x-rays in the article, as well.
