Milwaukee Area Dentist Tony Cigno Releases New Article on His Website Outlining What Constitutes a Dental Emergency – Necessitating Urgent Dental Care – and What Isn’t a Dental Emergency and Can Wait Until Office Hours

Milwaukee area dentist Dr. Tony answers the question, “What is a dental emergency and when do I need to seek emergency dental care in Milwaukee or Greenfield?”

Greenfield, WI — September 27, 2018 — Wisconsin Dentist Tony Cigno recently published an article titled, “Urgent Dental Care: What Is It? When Do You Need It?

Dr. Tony CignoDr. Cigno begins by defining a dental emergency. He explains, “A dental emergency is a broad term used to describe an issue involving the teeth and the importance of seeking immediate attention from a professional.”

Yet, not every oral injury is a true emergency. Sure, there are some things that need to be treated immediately. However, there are others that can wait until regular office hours. The key is knowing which is which, and what to do when.

The first step, explains Dr. Cigno, is doing a self-evaluation and asking yourself a few simple questions that he shares in the article. One of these addresses a severely loose (indicating a broken root or roots) or knocked out tooth.

In either scenario, that is a dental emergency and should be dealt with – and treated – right away. This increases the likelihood that the tooth can be preserved and reinserted by your Milwaukee dentist.

One injury that does not require urgent dental care is a chipped tooth that is not causing severe pain. But, adds Dr. Cigno, it’s important to still be very careful to not make the chip worse and if it’s actually a crack or a fracture, that’s a totally different story.

He elaborates, “A chip in a tooth can usually be fixed by filing it down or adding a filling. On the other hand, cracked or fractured teeth are dental emergencies. These usually mean the damage is coming from inside, out. Fractures can be so extreme that the tooth cannot be saved.”
