PRESS: Sleep Apnea, Sleep Disorders, and Passing the DOT Physical

Orlando DOT Physical Provider and Workflow Employer Services Owner Dr. Brad Levine Publishes New Article Examining Sleep Apnea, Other Sleep Disorders, and Passing the DOT Physical

Dr. Brad Levine, Orlando Chiropractor and owner at Workflow Employer Services releases new article discussing how sleep apnea and other sleep issues can impact a driver’s ability to get DOT medical certification.

Altamonte Springs, FL — December 2, 2016 — Workflow Employer Services owner and Orlando area chiropractor Dr. Brad Levine recently published a new article on his website “Sleep Apnea, Sleep Disorders, and DOT Medical Certification.”

Dr. Levine starts off the article with the statement that sleep apnea can be anything from a nuisance to a danger. He also adds that many commercial drivers worry about the diagnosis of sleep apnea – or other sleep disorders – as they relate to passing the DOT physical and getting DOT medical certification.

For those with sleep apnea, he explains, this isn’t a huge factor in passing the DOT physical. If the sleep apnea is being treated and the driver’s physician indicates it doesn’t otherwise negatively impact health, it shouldn’t cause a driver to fail.

On the other hand, EDS – Excessive Daytime Sleepiness – is a disqualifier for a driver. EDS must be ruled out before certification. Consequently, a medical opinion letter from the driver’s doctor will be required. Additionally, sleep studies for drivers will sometimes be ordered.

Likewise, narcolepsy is a disqualifier.

As Dr. Levine states, “The bottom line is that the severity of the sleep issue a driver is dealing with, determines whether he or she can get medical certification. Furthermore, this is a good thing for the driver no matter if he or she knows it or not. Since many sleep disorders can be treated so easily and effectively – and the results can be so massively beneficial in many ways – it’s a very positive thing for both the driver and the others on the road.”
