About Marta Zarrella:

A native Texan, Marta graduated from the University of Texas El Paso in 1979 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.  Two weeks after graduation, she moved to San Angelo, Texas and began her career with General Telephone and Electronics, which became Verizon in the nineties. For twelve years, she worked in Accounting and Information Systems in Texas and Florida, eventually retiring early as Director of Strategic Planning for GTE Data Services. Marta had the distinct pleasure of forging a path for Part Time Professionals with GTE/Verizon Corporation, piloting a Part Time Salaried Employee program after the birth of her second child. When their third child was born, Marta chose to become a stay-at-home mom. Knowing the life of a full time working mom, raising her children was her next goal.

Marta’s first work, a poem called With Dignity and Strength, was published in 2003.  In October of 2007, her family’s home was completely destroyed by the devastating Witchcreek firestorm.  All of Southern California, it seemed, was in flames.  At the time, Marta’s son, Richard, was a freshman at University of California, Santa Cruz while her second son, Robert, was in his first year of Community College in San Diego, and her daughter, Kathryn, was a senior in high school.   The healing process after such a catastrophic event goes very deep.  Zarrella and her husband of twenty-nine years decided that life had taken them in very different directions and an amicable divorce was finalized in 2010.  Every member of the family had to adapt to a number of significant life events.

Single now, she needed to significantly grow her income, so Marta began writing for a local newspaper, a Wine Region magazine, as well Examiner.com producing content for both an equestrian and a wine page. At the same time, she was processing her thoughts about loss and change in what has become her first published award winning novel, A Tangeled Web, Rejecting Technology’s Assault on Mother Nature. The book was truly inspired by Marta’s life, her work, and her interests.

By 2012, she created Storyteller Can and was busy with freelance writing. She submitted her work to the San Diego Press Club Annual Excellence awards, a prestigious competition processing over 4,000 entries. In her first year she won first and second place in the Magazine category. In 2013, her piece on the Boston Marathon bombing earned first place in Breaking News.  Her novel has alsoearned recognition in award competitions..  Zarrella likes to challenge herself by holding her work up to the best in the industry.  Writing is a third career, what Marta says she has been preparing for all these years.

In 2014, with a robust list of people seeking her help to write, coach writing, or edit their written work, Marta Zarrella incorporated her business: M.P. Zarrella Books, Inc.  M.P. Zarrella Books, Inc provides writing, editing, coaching and publishing services.  She also has the pleasure of writing newspaper and magazine articles about the interesting people in her community of Ramona, California.
