Jones writes, “It was welcome news when we heard that the IRS created a system to help taxpayers who have been victims of identity theft feel secure when filing their 2015 taxes. However, the more than 1.2 million victims who received identity protection personal identification numbers (IP PINs) might be wondering if they are legitimate since they were sent out with a glaring error.”

Elaborating on the error, Jones states, “The IRS sent out the notices stating that the IP PINS are for use on their 2014 taxes.” He continues adding, “That kind of mistake could raise suspicions as to the authenticity of the letter and could make victims feel more vulnerable than ever. It’s easy to understand how this could make taxpayers who’ve been scammed feel unsure.”
