About Mark
Mark Gredler is an electronics engineer who worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for more than 33 years, 10 of those in a Civil Aviation Assistance Group in Madrid, Spain, where he helped improve the Spanish Air Traffic Control System. While living in Spain in the 1980s, when it was legal to use metal detectors to hunt treasure, Mark took up treasure hunting with his oldest son. At the age of five, that son found their first ancient coin from 150 BC.
Also, in the 1980s, Mark started making notes and outlines for a future novel based on his experiences in Spain. But it was a long, 30-year process to produce and publish his novel, the first of a trilogy about an American living in Spain. He started the formal outlining and structuring of the novel after retiring from the FAA.
Mark had to overcome discouragement from haters, as well as fear of failure, to get his novel down on paper. Key to accomplishing this was taking action on essential principles from Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles. His breakthrough came when he connected with Bonnie Hearn Hill, a professional editor, his fourth, and the only one who was honest and direct, as well as encouraging. She was every bit as much of an encouragement as the naysayers had been discouraging. Mark’s chapter in this book is a look at how to respond to HATERS – how to turn discouragement from naysayers into motivation to do your best, and to become successful. His goal in sharing this is to be “that somebody” for somebody else.
Mark has published articles for the Celator magazine and contributed to the book Juan Ruiz, Arcipreste de Hita, y el Libro de Buen Amor, Congreso 2017. He presented his paper in Spanish at this conference, and it was published in that book and in the online Cervantes Virtual Library. The paper is also available in English on his website with its English title, “Similarities Between the Libro de Buen Amor (The Book of Good Love) and Sexual Iconography In Romanesque Churches.”
